What is a Valorant agent? Roles, kits and the newest 2026 pick
A Valorant agent is the character you lock in before a match: a fixed set of abilities plus a role that tells your team what you bring. Agents are not heroes you level up — they are closer to loadouts with a personality, balanced so no pick is strictly better than another. This page explains the concept, the four roles and the standard kit, then covers who the newest agent is in 2026.

What is a Valorant agent, exactly?
An agent is the playable character you choose before a match starts. Each agent has a fixed name, a fixed role and five abilities that never change between games. You do not level an agent up, unlock a skill tree or respec their kit — the agent you select in your first match is identical to the agent you select a year later.
That is where Valorant parts ways with hero shooters built around progression. In those games a hero often carries talents, perks or unlockable skills that change how the character plays over time. In Valorant every agent is complete from the moment you own them, and the ceiling comes entirely from the player: lineups, timing, movement, crosshair placement and game sense.
The idea is simpler than it looks. An agent belongs to one of four roles, the role determines what kind of utility you bring, and utility is the entire reason the role exists. A Duelist wins the duel; a Controller decides whether the duel is worth taking in the first place.
The four roles and what each one actually does
Every agent in the game sits inside one of four roles. Roles are the fastest way to understand a pick you have never touched, because they tell you what your teammates will expect from you.
Riot balances around these roles rather than around individual agents, which is why a single tweak can shift a whole role’s pick rate. If you are still deciding what to play, the role matters more than the agent name.
| Role | Job on the team | Typical utility |
|---|---|---|
| Duelist | Take space and create the first pick. | Entry dashes, flashes, self-sustain. |
| Controller | Shape where the fight happens. | Smokes, walls, area denial. |
| Initiator | Open a site by gathering info and forcing enemies out. | Recon, flashes, stuns. |
| Sentinel | Lock down flanks and hold ground alone. | Traps, cameras, healing, resurrection. |
The standard kit: five abilities, four slots
Every agent follows the same skeleton. It is one of the most consistent design rules in the game, and it is why you can read any new agent’s kit in about two minutes.
The signature ability is the slot most players misunderstand. It costs nothing to use each round, but it usually goes on a cooldown after it is spent, or recharges only after a kill or a pair of kills depending on the agent. Your two basic abilities are the ones you actually buy in the shop every round, so your economy is really a decision about how many of those you can afford.
The ultimate charges from ultimate points, which you earn from kills, from the orbs scattered across the map, and from planting or defusing the Spike. How many points an ultimate needs differs from agent to agent.
| Slot | What it means | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Passive or free ability | Always available and part of your base kit. | Free |
| Two basic abilities | The bread and butter you buy each round. | Credits in the buy phase |
| Signature ability | The ability that defines the agent. | Free — refreshes every round |
| Ultimate | The round-changing power. | Ultimate points |
Who is the newest agent in 2026?
The newest agent is Hush (遐思) — the 30th agent in the roster and the ninth Duelist. She is a telekinetic playmaker from Guangdong, China, and she was revealed at the VALORANT Champions 2026 Grand Final in Shanghai on October 18, 2026.
Hush goes live on October 27, 2026 with Season 26, Act VI. She is the third Valorant agent from China after Sage and Iso, and the second new agent of 2026 following the Controller Miks.
Her kit is built around control rather than raw speed: a telekinesis passive, a crosshair-guided flash, a crosshair-guided pull and a dash to a placed anchor. Start with the Hush reveal page or jump straight to the full ability breakdown.
How many agents are there right now?
The roster currently holds 30 agents, split across four roles: 9 Duelists, 7 Controllers, 7 Initiators and 7 Sentinels. Before Hush shipped it was 29.
That is a deliberately small roster by hero-shooter standards. Riot adds only a handful of agents each year, and every release has to find a space that no existing agent already fills. The full agent list keeps a running tally by role and by pick.
The odd case of agent number 8
There is one slot in the agent numbering you will never see filled. Agent 8 does not exist — not in the game, not in the story. Riot skipped it entirely, and it has never been explained, even now that the roster has grown from 8 to 30.
Veteran players treat it as a party trick. The next time someone asks how many agents Valorant has, the honest answer is 30 — but the numbering has a hole in it.
